Breaking Barriers: San Jose Jazz's New Works Fest Amplifies Emerging Talent

San Jose Jazz Festival 2007 (Sunday)

In the heart of the South Bay, San Jose Jazz is turning heads with its innovative New Works Festival, a groundbreaking initiative that’s giving rising musicians a powerful platform to showcase their creativity. The festival, running from February 20 to March 14, transforms the intimate SJZ Break Room into a vibrant launchpad for musical innovation.

The series spotlights six diverse bandleaders, each bringing their unique sound and story. Richmond-based soul singer Luqman Frank kicks off the festival with a powerful track “Fighting for Each Other,” inspired by community resistance against immigration enforcement. His band features Bay Area music heavyweights like keyboardist Mike Blankenship, representing the collaborative spirit of the local music scene.

Oakland saxophonist Ashley Jemison makes her South Bay debut as a bandleader, presenting her commission “Movin’ Up” - a bold statement about her artistic journey. Similarly, El Cerrito vocalist Ouida brings a raw, genre-blending performance that reflects her Filipino-Irish heritage and multifaceted musical identity.

What makes this festival remarkable is its commitment to supporting emerging artists. Each performer receives a commission, transforming the traditional performance model into a nurturing ecosystem for musical creativity. The festival proves that with the right support, artists can transform their musical dreams into powerful, authentic expressions.

Tickets are affordably priced at just $15, making this innovative musical experience accessible to music lovers across the Bay Area. Whether you’re a jazz enthusiast or simply curious about emerging local talent, the New Works Festival offers an intimate glimpse into the future of Bay Area music.

The festival runs at San Jose Jazz’s Break Room, promising six nights of groundbreaking performances that challenge musical boundaries and celebrate artistic innovation.
