From Chicken Ranch to Lavender Paradise: A Love Story of Local Farming

Nestled on Chapman Lane in Petaluma, the Lavender Bee Farm tells a story of agricultural transformation and generational passion. What was once a chicken ranch in the 1950s has blossomed into a stunning lavender haven, lovingly tended by JoAnn and Richard Wallenstein.
The farm’s journey began when JoAnn’s parents purchased the property shortly after her birth. Growing up immersed in agricultural life, JoAnn participated in 4-H projects, raising sheep and developing a deep connection to the land. When she and Richard inherited the farm in 2000, they faced a decision about its future.
Inspired by lavender’s drought-tolerance and resistance to gophers, they planted 500 plants that have since grown to 3,000. Richard’s beekeeping added another layer of magic, as the bees thrived among the fragrant lavender fields, producing a uniquely floral honey.
Their small, appointment-only farm store offers an array of handcrafted products - from lavender-infused honey and essential oils to beeswax candles and moisture bars. Everything is produced without pesticides, reflecting their commitment to sustainable agriculture.
While they’re now scaling back and enjoying time with their growing family, the Wallensteins have created more than just a farm. They’ve built a community space that has hosted school tours, events, and even featured a beloved camel named Mel.
Richard’s approach to beekeeping is remarkably gentle, focusing on maintaining clean hives and allowing bees to thrive naturally. He captures local swarms and manages 80-100 hives, sharing his passion with visitors from around the world.
Through changing seasons and challenges like unexpected winds affecting lavender harvests, the Lavender Bee Farm remains a testament to adaptable, loving agricultural stewardship - transforming a simple plot of land into a sensory wonderland that connects people with nature’s delicate rhythms.
