Universal Pictures has done it again with the epic conclusion of the “Wicked” musical film franchise, shattering box office expectations and proving that movie musicals are far from a dying art form.

The second installment, “Wicked: For Good,” has dramatically outperformed its predecessor, earning a stunning $150 million in North American theaters and $226 million globally during its opening weekend. This remarkable achievement not only makes it the biggest opening ever for a Broadway musical adaptation but also secures its place as the second-highest debut of the year.

Directed by Jon M. Chu and starring Cynthia Ervio and Ariana Grande, the film has captured audiences’ hearts, with an impressive 83% of viewers stating they would “definitely recommend” the movie to friends. Women continue to drive ticket sales, comprising approximately 71% of the audience.

The film’s success is particularly significant for the entertainment industry, which has been recovering from pandemic-induced challenges. Universal’s domestic distribution head, Jim Orr, described the results as “fantastic,” highlighting the film’s cultural impact and audience engagement.

IMAX showings played a crucial role in the film’s success, accounting for $15.5 million or 11% of its domestic earnings, a November record for the company. This performance suggests a broadening appeal for musical adaptations across diverse audience demographics.

With the combined “Wicked” films costing around $300 million to produce, the franchise has already proven to be a massive financial success. The first film garnered over $758.7 million worldwide and received 10 Oscar nominations, winning two for costume and production design.

As the film industry looks toward the holiday season, “Wicked: For Good” sets a promising tone. Upcoming releases like “Zootopia 2” are expected to further boost cinema attendance, potentially helping the domestic box office reach its post-pandemic goal of $9 billion.

The film’s triumph underscores a renewed appreciation for cinematic storytelling and the enduring magic of musical adaptations.
