Oakland's Throwing a Parade for Alysa Liu, and We're So Here for It

Alysa Liu just made history at the 2026 Winter Olympics, and the City of Oakland is ready to show out. The 20-year-old figure skating sensation from Richmond became the first American woman in 24 years to snag the gold medal in women’s singles skating, and since she trained at the Oakland Ice Center, the city is planning a major community-wide celebration to honor her incredible achievement.

Liu touched down at SFO late Monday night after absolutely crushing her routine in Italy, and by Tuesday, the City of Oakland had already posted on Instagram announcing plans for some kind of championship-style parade vibe. “Alysa represents the heart, grit, resilience, and joy of Oakland,” the post read. “Her achievement has filled our city with pride, and we are coordinating with her team now to finalize a date so the community can celebrate her together”.

Not gonna lie, the details are still pretty sparse, but honestly, that makes sense. Liu literally just got back and is probably drowning in jet lag right now. The city said more specifics are coming soon, so we’re keeping our eyes peeled for the actual date and logistics.

What we do know is that the Oakland Ice Center community already threw down a watch party when Liu’s gold medal-winning performance aired, and over 100 people showed up to celebrate. That’s the kind of energy we’re talking about.

Liu’s win is a massive deal for the Bay Area. She’s now part of an incredibly small club of American women who’ve won gold in figure skating, joining Fremont’s Kristi Yamaguchi, who won in 1992, and San Jose’s Peggy Fleming, who took home the medal back in 1968. On top of her individual gold, Liu also helped Team USA clinch gold in the team skating category, which means she’s literally a two-time Olympic gold medalist.

The ice skating community at Oakland Ice Center has been buzzing about Liu for years, watching her work toward this moment. So a city-wide celebration feels pretty fitting, this is someone who literally trained in Oakland and made it to the top of the world stage.

While we wait for official celebration details to drop, it’s clear the Bay Area is absolutely losing its mind over one of our own. Alysa Liu put the region on the map in a massive way, and Oakland isn’t about to let that moment pass without throwing her a proper celebration. Stay tuned for updates on when and where you can join the festivities.
