Trump's Tariffs Are Making Your Holiday Zoo Trip More Expensive

The holiday season just got a little more pricey for Bay Area families looking to enjoy Oakland Zoo’s beloved Glowfari light festival. This year’s festive display is costing the zoo an extra $100,000 due to ongoing tariffs on imported Chinese illuminated displays, a cost that’s being passed directly to visitors.

Oakland Zoo’s CEO Nik Dehejia shared the financial challenge with local media, emphasizing that despite the increased expenses, the zoo remains committed to bringing joy to the community. “We need joy, we need some fun , and Glowfari brings that to the Bay Area,” Dehejia stated.

Visitors will notice ticket prices have risen from last year’s lowest rate of $26.50 to $30.75 for select weeknight tickets. While the price increase might seem modest, it represents a direct impact of trade policies on local entertainment experiences.

The Glowfari festival, now in its sixth year, continues to delight Bay Area residents with spectacular colored lanterns depicting animals and regional landmarks. Running nightly through January 25, 2026, from 4:30 pm to 9 pm, the event remains a popular holiday attraction despite the increased cost.

This price hike highlights the broader economic implications of international trade policies, demonstrating how global economic decisions can affect local community experiences. For families and holiday revelers, the message is clear: plan ahead and budget accordingly for this beloved seasonal attraction.

Tickets are currently available through early December, with the zoo expected to release additional dates as the holiday season progresses. Those interested in attending are encouraged to check the Oakland Zoo’s website for the most up-to-date ticket information and pricing.
