San Francisco’s beloved holiday tradition is back in full swing, transforming Union Square into a winter wonderland for locals and visitors alike.

The iconic Safeway Holiday Ice Rink has officially reopened, marking the 18th year of this cherished seasonal attraction. Skaters can now glide across the downtown ice rink daily from 10 am to 10 pm, with adult tickets priced at $22 and children’s tickets at $17, which conveniently include skate rentals.

This year’s lineup of special events promises something for everyone. The always-popular Drag Queens on Ice returns on December 4th at 6:30 pm, bringing fabulous flair to the skating experience. For those seeking a unique twist, the Silent Skate event on December 11th offers participants headphones for a disco-inspired skating session. Thrill-seekers can look forward to the annual Polar Bear Skate on New Year’s Day, where brave skaters don swimsuits for a chilly yet exciting meetup.

In addition to the ice rink, the famous Macy’s Holiday Tree will be lit on Tuesday, November 11th. While there won’t be an official tree lighting ceremony, locals can still gather around dusk to witness the festive countdown.

Local politicians like State Senator Scott Wiener and District 3 Supervisor Danny Sauter were on hand for the rink’s opening, highlighting the ongoing vitality of San Francisco’s downtown area. The ice rink will remain open through January 19th, 2026, offering plenty of opportunities for winter fun.

Whether you’re a seasoned skater or a first-timer looking to embrace the holiday spirit, Union Square’s ice rink provides a quintessential San Francisco winter experience that captures the city’s vibrant and inclusive energy.
