The San Francisco 49ers experienced a devastating Sunday in Tampa Bay, losing not just the game 30-19 but also their star linebacker Fred Warner for the entire 2025 season.

The matchup against Baker Mayfield’s Buccaneers quickly turned into a nightmare for the Niners, with Mayfield delivering a standout performance that exposed the team’s vulnerabilities. Mac Jones, stepping in for an injured Brock Purdy, managed an impressive 347 yards but couldn’t prevent the loss.

Warner’s season-ending ankle injury was a particularly brutal blow. Reports indicate his ankle was broken and dislocated after being caught underneath falling players, a moment CBS was hesitant to replay extensively.

Additional team tensions surfaced when wide receiver Jauan Jennings became embroiled in a heated sideline confrontation with head coach Kyle Shanahan. Team staff had to intervene to separate the two, adding another layer of complexity to the team’s challenging day.

Despite the loss, the 49ers remain in first place in the NFC West, technically tied with the Rams and Seahawks. They still hold the tiebreaker having defeated both teams earlier in the season.

On a positive note, kicker Eddy Piñeiro continued his impressive streak, moving to second place on the all-time NFL field goal accuracy list with four successful kicks ranging from 29 to 54 yards.

The team will look to rebound in their upcoming Sunday Night Football game against the Atlanta Falcons at Levi’s Stadium, with hopes of potentially having tight end George Kittle return to practice this week.
