Oakland just got a whole lot cooler. Figure skater Alysa Liu, a hometown hero through and through, just made history by winning two gold medals at the 2026 Winter Olympics, and some of the Bay Area’s biggest names wanted to celebrate her achievement.
Steph Curry and Steve Kerr, both Olympic gold medalists themselves from the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics, sent Liu some major love with a video message during her celebratory downtown rally on Thursday. And honestly? Their words were as genuine as they come.
“Alysa, congratulations on your gold medal achievement, representing not only the United States, but the Bay Area, Oakland”, Curry said in the video. “Super proud. Congratulations. You did that. From one gold medal winner to another, just want to say keep doing your thing. Keep representing the Bay, and we love you”.
Kerr kept it real too, saying, “Alysa, I just want to say congratulations. That was so incredible to watch. The whole Bay Area is so proud of you, and everybody with the Warriors was watching and pulling for you, and so excited. So thanks for representing the Bay and making us all proud”.
Liu’s achievement is genuinely wild. She won gold in both the women’s singles figure skating event and the mixed team figure skating event, making her the first U.S. Olympian to win gold in singles since 2002. That’s a huge deal, and the Bay Area is absolutely here for it.
The celebration in downtown Oakland was nothing short of legendary. Liu received the Key to the City during the festivities, and when she spoke to the crowd, she made sure everyone knew who this was for. “This is for y’all!” she told her hometown supporters. The energy must have been unreal.
What’s cool about this whole situation is how connected our Bay Area community is, even across different sports. Whether you’re shooting hoops at Chase Center or executing a perfect triple axel on ice, everyone here looks out for each other. Curry and Kerr’s video messages weren’t just obligatory shout-outs, they genuinely showed up for one of their own.
While Liu got her props from the Warriors legends through a screen this time, don’t be surprised if they link up in person soon. Oakland’s got enough gold medalists now that we could probably start our own Olympic team at this point. Liu’s back in her hometown with her hardware, and the Bay Area is rightfully basking in her glory. This is what it looks like when your community lifts each other up, no matter what game you’re playing.
