The Next Generation Is Coming for Steph Curry's 3-Point Crown

Steph Curry’s legendary 3-point records have defined modern basketball, but a new wave of shooters is starting to close in. While a pesky knee injury has sidelined the Warriors legend, younger players like Anthony Edwards and rookie sensation Kon Knueppel are putting together historic shooting seasons that have people wondering: who’s next to break Curry’s records?

Curry has already cemented his place in NBA history with some absolutely ridiculous accomplishments this season alone. He surpassed Michael Jordan for the most 40-point games after turning 30, extended his All-Star selections record, and continues to add to his career-best 4,233 made 3-pointers. The guy is basically rewriting the record books in real time. But here’s the thing that really matters: his two most significant 3-point records, the 4,233 career total and his absurd 402 three-pointers in a single season from 2016, are still untouchable for now.

The landscape of basketball has completely changed since Curry burst onto the scene. Teams now take more than twice as many 3-pointers per game compared to his rookie season. Centers are launching them from way beyond the arc. The entire game has shifted because of how Curry plays. This new environment should theoretically make it easier for someone to break his records, but Curry himself isn’t worried. In an interview, he acknowledged that his records aren’t unbreakable and actually said he’d be “kind of cool” to see someone eventually surpass them.

Enter Edwards and Knueppel. Edwards has already made the most 3-pointers ever at his age and has logged a league-best 47 games with at least five made 3s since last season. He’s already at 1,289 made 3-pointers through his sixth season, while Curry had only converted 1,191 at the same point in his career. Edwards is confident about his chances, telling reporters he’s “gonna catch him”.

But Knueppel? This kid is doing something absolutely bonkers as a 20-year-old rookie. He became the fastest player ever to reach 100 three-pointers, doing it in just 29 games. He’s already broken Curry’s rookie record for made 3s and is shooting 43.5% from deep while taking eight 3-pointers per game. That’s unheard of for a rookie.

The real challenge remains that ridiculous 402 three-pointers in a single season mark. That requires hitting five 3-pointers every single game while staying healthy all season long. Only James Harden came close in 2018-19 with 378. Edwards’ season-high is 320 threes. It’s an astronomical bar that probably won’t get touched for years, if ever.

As for the career total of 4,233? That’s more realistic long-term if Edwards or Knueppel maintain their current trajectory and stay healthy. Curry even seems excited about the possibility. He compared it to when Ray Allen broke Reggie Miller’s 3-point record, a passing of the torch. Whether it’s Edwards, Knueppel, or someone else entirely, the race for 4,000 is officially on.
