The San Francisco 49ers defied expectations Thursday night, shocking the LA Rams with a thrilling 26-23 overtime victory that nobody saw coming. Despite being 8.5-point underdogs and missing three of their star players - Brock Purdy, George Kittle, and Nick Bosa - the team proved their resilience and depth.

Backup quarterback Mac Jones stepped up in a massive way, delivering what might be the best performance of his career. With his former Patriots teammate Kendrick Bourne by his side, Jones helped the 49ers surge to a 14-0 lead early in the second half, demonstrating remarkable composure under pressure.

The game was a nail-biter that kept fans on the edge of their seats. The Rams fought back, tying the game 20-20 in the fourth quarter, but a critical fumble by Rams running back Kyren Williams gave the 49ers a lifeline. In overtime, kicker Eddy Piñeiro sealed the victory with a dramatic field goal that bounced off the upright and in.

The win was particularly sweet for 49ers fans, who were notably louder than the home crowd at SoFi Stadium. The victory also propelled the team into sole possession of first place in the NFC West, with a perfect 3-0 division record.

ESPN has already dubbed this the largest upset of the 2025 season so far, surpassing the Cleveland Browns’ win against the Green Bay Packers in Week 3. For the 49ers, it’s a testament to their team’s depth and fighting spirit.

With this win, the 49ers sit at an impressive 4-1 record and will enjoy a ten-day “mini-bye” before their next game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on October 12th.
