If you’re wondering why Golden State Warriors guard LJ Cryer showed up to practice in a triple-XL throwback University of Arizona Steve Kerr jersey, well, that’s what happens when you lose a bet to your own coach.

Cryer and head coach Steve Kerr apparently had some fun wagering on their respective college basketball teams back in February when Arizona and Houston faced off as ranked conference rivals. The Wildcats were sitting at No. 4 in the country, while the Cougars held down the No. 2 spot. The stakes? Bragging rights and apparently one embarrassingly oversized vintage jersey.

Arizona ended up winning the matchup 73-66 on February 21st, which meant Cryer had to pay up. And pay up he did, by rocking that massive Arizona Kerr jersey during the team’s Thursday practice session at Chase Center. The jersey was so comically large that even Kerr admitted it probably wouldn’t have fit him back in his playing days.

“Yeah, LJ had to pay off his bet from two weeks ago when my Arizona Wildcats beat his University of Houston Cougars in Houston”, Kerr explained to reporters after practice. “So, he wore a triple-XL ‘Kerr’ Arizona jersey, which… I’m not sure why I have a triple-XL jersey, because it wouldn’t have fit me, either. But it looked especially large on him”.

The whole situation is genuinely hilarious, and it speaks to the kind of relationship Kerr has built with his players. This isn’t some cold, distant coach-player dynamic. This is the kind of bond where they can make bets on college games and actually follow through on the punishment without it becoming awkward. Kerr kept things light when discussing it with the media, noting that Cryer’s “a good, young guy paying off his bet” with a smile.

What makes this story even better is that neither Arizona nor Houston were just any teams that day. They were competing for first place in the Big 12 conference with rankings that made this a genuinely important game. Cryer had to watch his alma mater go down in a tight 73-66 contest, and then he had to show up to work the next week and see his coach’s smiling face every single day knowing he owed him something.

Kerr, for what it’s worth, kept the details of his end of the bet under wraps. He didn’t reveal what he risked if Houston had won, which is actually pretty solid coaching, let the player take the L without having to hear about it constantly.

It’s these kinds of moments that remind us why sports are fun. Whether it’s college basketball or the NBA, when people actually care about the games and are willing to put something on the line, it brings out the human side of competition.
