Will Brandon Aiyuk Return? 49ers Coach Breaks Silence on Wide Receiver's Recovery

Brandon Aiyuk

The San Francisco 49ers are holding their breath as wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk continues his recovery from a significant knee injury sustained in mid-November 2024. Head coach Kyle Shanahan remains cautiously optimistic about Aiyuk’s potential return to the field in the 2025 NFL season.

Aiyuk, who suffered a torn ACL and MCL over a year ago, is currently on the physically unable to perform list as he rehabilitates from surgery. Shanahan told reporters he is “pretty confident” that Aiyuk will eventually return and open up his practice window, though his comeback depends on reaching specific technical benchmarks like running speed and overall physical readiness.

Before his injury-shortened 2024 season, Aiyuk secured a lucrative four-year, $120 million contract extension with the 49ers following what was considered the most productive season of his NFL career. His absence has created a significant gap in the team’s receiving strategy.

In the meantime, the 49ers’ receiving corps has adapted, with star running back Christian McCaffrey leading the team in receptions (61) and receiving yards (626). Wide receiver Kendrick Bourne has also stepped up, becoming the most productive player in the wide receiver group with 30 receptions for 463 receiving yards.

The team remains patient, understanding the complexity of Aiyuk’s recovery. With a 21-day window to activate him once his practice window opens, the 49ers are carefully managing his return to ensure his long-term health and performance.

Fans and analysts alike are watching closely, hoping Aiyuk will make a successful comeback and continue to be a key playmaker for the team. As the 2025 NFL season progresses, his potential return could be a game-changing moment for the 49ers.
