Eight Sleep Just Hit Unicorn Status—Here's What That Means for Your Sleep Tech

Eight Sleep, the sleep tech startup that’s been quietly revolutionizing how we think about rest, just crossed a major milestone. The company announced it raised $50 million in new funding, pushing its valuation to $1.5 billion. For context, that makes it a unicorn, a term used for startups valued at $1 billion or more. And honestly, it’s wild to think about how far the company has come since 2021, when it was valued at just $500 million.
So what exactly is Eight Sleep? The company makes smart mattress accessories that do more than just track your sleep patterns. They can adjust the temperature of your bed as you sleep, which sounds like a small thing until you realize how much temperature actually affects sleep quality. The startup has been expanding aggressively too, its products are now available in over 34 countries, and last year they launched a hydro blanket and a new pillow cover, both with temperature control capabilities.
What’s really exciting is where Eight Sleep is heading next. The company says it achieved free-cash-flow positivity in 2025, which means they’re not just burning through investor money anymore. They’re planning to use this new $50 million to develop new products, expand globally, and pursue clinical validation for something pretty ambitious: FDA approval for a product that can detect and mitigate sleep apnea.
But the real buzzword here is AI. Eight Sleep is working on what they’re calling a sleep-focused AI agent that would control your mattress’s temperature, elevation, and firmness automatically. The system would learn about your body each night and adjust proactively before you even get into bed. According to the company, early pilots of this AI guidance have actually changed people’s behavior, folks are adjusting their exercise timing, caffeine intake, and sleep schedules based on the app’s analysis.
Of course, Eight Sleep isn’t without its hiccups. Last October, an Amazon Web Services outage caused users’ mattresses to stop working entirely, and things got uncomfortably hot (literally, the beds overheated). The company had to add an “outage mode” to prevent future disasters. It’s a reminder that these smart devices come with their own set of challenges when they’re too dependent on internet connectivity.
The competition in sleep tech is heating up too. Eight Sleep faces off against companies like BedJet and Chillpad in the temperature control space, while competing with sleep trackers like Oura and Whoop. But Eight Sleep seems convinced it’s building something different, a comprehensive health technology platform rather than just another gadget for your bedroom.
With this fresh funding and unicorn status, expect Eight Sleep to push harder on that FDA approval and roll out even more innovative features. The sleep tech revolution might actually be just getting started.
