Online gaming platforms are stepping up their safety game, and Roblox is leading the charge with innovative age verification technology that uses artificial intelligence to protect young users.
In a bold move to enhance user safety, Roblox has introduced a new system that requires teens to submit video selfies for AI-powered age estimation. The platform aims to create more secure digital spaces by implementing a tiered friend system with “Connections” and “Trusted Connections” that offer varying levels of interaction based on verified age.
The new feature allows teenagers aged 13-17 to add trusted connections, with additional restrictions for users over 18. To access these enhanced features, users must complete an age verification process involving a video selfie analyzed by AI. If a user appears to be under 13, they will automatically lose access to age-inappropriate features.
However, the approach isn’t without criticism. Online safety experts like Kirra Pendergast from Safe on Social argue that the system still places too much responsibility on minors to manage their own digital safety. She suggests that while the intentions are good, the implementation leaves significant vulnerabilities.
Roblox’s chief safety officer, Matt Kaufman, emphasizes that these changes are part of a comprehensive strategy to create safer online environments. The platform currently hosts approximately 98 million users from 180 countries, with over 60 percent being over 13 years old.
The company recognizes the ongoing challenges of online child safety, especially in light of previous incidents involving predatory behavior. By leveraging AI and implementing multi-layered safety protocols, Roblox is attempting to create what Kaufman calls a “safe by default” platform.
Parents can now grant dashboard access to monitor their children’s trusted connections, though the platform won’t proactively notify parents about interactions. This approach gives teenagers some independence while providing guardians with oversight tools.
As digital platforms continue to evolve, Roblox’s new safety features represent a significant step towards creating more secure online spaces for younger users, balancing technological innovation with user protection.
