In a move that’s set to shake up California’s political landscape, Representative Eric Swalwell has officially launched his campaign for governor, targeting the critical issues of rising living costs and political resistance.
Swalwell, a 45-year-old East Bay congressman known for his vocal opposition to former President Donald Trump, announced his candidacy during a late-night appearance on Jimmy Kimmel’s show. His campaign centers on addressing the economic challenges facing Californians, emphasizing that despite being the world’s fourth-largest economy, many residents struggle to afford basic living expenses.
His political credentials include serving as one of the impeachment managers during Trump’s second impeachment and holding positions on the House Intelligence Committee. Swalwell also highlights his local government experience as a former planning commissioner and city councilmember in Dublin, a Bay Area suburb he represents in Congress.
The gubernatorial race is already crowded, with other prominent Democrats like Tom Steyer, Katie Porter, Xavier Becerra, and Antonio Villaraigosa throwing their hats into the ring. Swalwell’s campaign distinguishes itself by positioning him as a fighter who will protect California’s interests, particularly in the face of potential federal challenges.
“This great state needs a fighter and a protector,” Swalwell stated, referencing potential threats from a hypothetical second Trump administration, including potential immigration raids and research funding cuts.
While Swalwell has not yet unveiled detailed policy proposals, he promises to leverage his experience transforming Dublin from a city of “low income and low expectations” to one of California’s most prosperous communities.
As California prepares for a gubernatorial transition in 2027 with Gavin Newsom terming out, Swalwell’s campaign represents a fresh perspective from a younger generation of Democratic leadership committed to addressing economic inequality and protecting progressive values.
The race promises to be a dynamic contest that will likely reflect broader national political tensions and offer insights into California’s future political direction.
