California: The Sanctuary State for Abortion Access in a Post-Roe America

Protect Abortion Access

In the wake of the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision, California has emerged as a critical lifeline for individuals seeking abortion care from states with strict reproductive restrictions. Women like Marcela Bermudez and Alexandria Cardenas have been forced to travel hundreds of miles, spending thousands of dollars, to access essential healthcare services that were once considered a constitutional right.

Since the overturning of Roe v. Wade, California has seen a dramatic 17% increase in total abortions and a staggering 200% increase in out-of-state patients seeking reproductive healthcare. These numbers reveal a harsh reality: access to abortion has become a complex, often traumatic journey for many Americans.

Personal stories highlight the emotional and financial challenges of seeking abortion care. Bermudez, who was 25 and 14 weeks pregnant, had to navigate a challenging landscape of limited options, ultimately relying on an abortion fund to finance her procedure. Similarly, Cardenas faced significant emotional hurdles, traveling from Texas to California and struggling with internalized shame and stigma.

The landscape of abortion access has evolved, with shield laws and telemedicine emerging as critical strategies. Providers can now mail abortion medications to patients in states with total bans, offering a lifeline to those who cannot travel. In 2024, an average of 10,000 abortions per month were provided through these shield laws, demonstrating the resilience of reproductive healthcare networks.

Despite these challenges, advocates and healthcare providers remain committed to supporting patients. Organizations like The Brigid Alliance are instrumental in providing practical support, from booking flights to arranging accommodations for those seeking abortion care.

As legal battles continue and state restrictions remain in place, California stands as a beacon of hope for reproductive rights, offering compassionate care and support to those who need it most.
