Independent Candidate Shakes Up Northern California's Political Landscape in 2026 Race

The upcoming 2026 congressional election in California’s 2nd District is heating up as Humboldt County educator Colby Smart announces his independent campaign to challenge long-standing Representative Jared Huffman.

Smart, currently serving as deputy superintendent at the Humboldt County Office of Education, brings a fresh perspective to the political arena. Born and raised in Lake County and a Humboldt County resident for nearly three decades, Smart argues that the district needs representation that transcends traditional party lines.

“I’m running because District 2 deserves representation that puts people before politics,” Smart stated in his campaign announcement. His platform focuses on critical local issues including rural economic development, strengthening public education, protecting natural resources, and promoting government accountability.

The election arrives on the heels of significant electoral changes, with the recent passage of Proposition 50 redrawing California’s congressional map. These new boundaries will dramatically reshape the 2nd District, removing left-leaning areas like Ukiah and Santa Rosa while incorporating more conservative regions such as Redding and Modoc County.

Smart sees these redistricting changes as an opportunity for meaningful political transformation. “When maps change, representation should change with them to ensure equal representation,” he emphasized. “No community should ever feel ignored or taken for granted”.

With the political landscape shifting, Smart’s independent candidacy represents a potential challenge to the incumbent Huffman, who has represented the district since 2013. By positioning himself as a candidate focused on community needs rather than party allegiance, Smart is betting on voters’ desire for more responsive and locally-focused representation.

As the 2026 midterm election approaches, all eyes will be on this potentially pivotal race in Northern California’s congressional district.
