California’s political landscape is heating up as State Senate President Pro Tempore Mike McGuire announces his bid for the 1st Congressional District in 2026, targeting Republican incumbent Doug LaMalfa.
McGuire, a seasoned politician from Geyserville, brings a compelling personal narrative to his campaign. Raised by a single mother and grandmother on a Sonoma County ranch, he has deep roots in Northern California’s progressive movement. Having served in the state Senate since 2014 and becoming president pro tempore in 2024, McGuire is positioning himself as a champion for working families and democratic values.
The race gains additional significance following the passage of Proposition 50, a redistricting measure that redraws congressional maps to potentially favor Democratic candidates. The new map shifts the 1st District’s boundaries, removing conservative strongholds like Redding and incorporating more Democratic-leaning areas such as Ukiah and Santa Rosa.
McGuire isn’t holding back in his critique of the current representation, directly calling LaMalfa a “lapdog” for former President Donald Trump. His campaign emphasizes fighting for healthcare access, reducing costs for working families, and defending democratic institutions.
Already garnering significant political support, McGuire has received endorsements from high-profile Democrats including Senator Adam Schiff, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and Representatives Mike Thompson and Jared Huffman.
With a background in wildfire safety, public education, and environmental advocacy, McGuire is positioning himself as a candidate deeply committed to Northern California’s unique challenges and opportunities. His campaign slogan “I’m all in for Northern California, every damn day” signals a passionate, direct approach to grassroots representation.
As the 2026 congressional race takes shape, McGuire’s candidacy represents a potentially transformative moment for the region’s political landscape.
