The Oakland community is reeling from the shocking loss of legendary football coach John Beam, who died Friday morning after being shot at Laney College. Beam, a 66-year-old athletic director and beloved mentor, spent over four decades transforming the lives of young athletes in the Bay Area.
Beam’s illustrious coaching career included 22 years at Skyline High School, where he led the team to four undefeated seasons and 15 league championships, compiling an impressive 160-33-3 record. In 2004, he transitioned to Laney College, where he guided the team to a community college national championship in 2018.
The shooting occurred around 3 am, with 27-year-old Cedric Irving Jr. arrested and expected to face murder charges. Oakland Police Chief James Beere confirmed the incident was targeted, stating Irving was “on campus for a specific reason” and had previously played football at Skyline High School, though not under Beam’s coaching.
Bream’s impact extended far beyond the football field. He was featured in the Netflix docuseries “Last Chance U,” which highlighted community college students seeking redemption. He coached future NFL Pro Bowlers like C.J. Anderson and Marvel Smith, and was known for providing mentorship and opportunities to countless young athletes.
The timing of the tragedy is particularly devastating, occurring during a visit by Skyline High School students to Laney College - just a day after a shooting at the high school itself. Beam’s family released a heartbreaking statement, describing him as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and a dedicated servant to the Oakland community.
Political leaders and sports figures have expressed deep sorrow, with Congresswoman Barbara Lee calling Beam “a giant in Oakland - a mentor, an educator, and a lifeline for thousands of young people”. His legacy of transforming lives through education and athletics will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations.
